Quick answer: Measure the Bible itself in three directions while it is closed: overall height, front-cover width, and spine thickness. Then tell the manufacturer what else the case must hold. Those measurements are the starting point for a custom pattern, not an automatic finished-case size.
Bibles with the same general label can vary by publisher, edition, binding and page count. A study Bible, journaling Bible and compact Bible may need very different interiors. For a brand or church ordering hundreds of cases, measuring a physical reference copy before sampling prevents a small fit error from being repeated across the whole production run.

The three measurements to send

1. Height
Lay the closed Bible on a flat surface. Measure from the top edge of its outer cover to the bottom edge. Include any cover edge that extends beyond the pages. Record the measurement in millimeters or inches and state which unit you used.
2. Closed width
Measure across the front cover from the spine edge to the outer edge while the Bible rests closed naturally. Do not flatten or force the cover open. If the book has tabs or a projecting closure, include those details in a photo so the pattern maker can assess them.
3. Spine thickness
Measure the book’s thickness at the spine. This is often the dimension buyers overlook. A cover that fits the height and front width can still strain its zipper when the spine, journaling tabs or an added notebook take up more depth than expected.
Measure the contents as a set
Decide whether the case will carry only the Bible or also a journal, church bulletin, prayer cards, pens, highlighters or a tablet. Lay out the actual items and photograph them beside a ruler. Identify which items need their own pockets and which can share a compartment. This helps us propose a realistic internal layout instead of guessing from a single book measurement.
A finished case needs room for its lining, padding, seam allowances and zipper path. There is no universal clearance that works for every construction. A slim slip-on cover and a padded organizer with several pockets require different pattern decisions. We confirm the final fit with a physical sample and the approved contents before bulk production.
Common measurement mistakes
- Measuring the printed page rather than the outer cover. The hard or flexible cover may extend beyond the pages.
- Using a seller’s “small” or “large” label as a dimension. Labels are not consistent between brands.
- Ignoring the spine and extra contents. Pens and notebooks can affect zipper clearance and case depth.
- Providing only an open-book measurement. We need the closed width and spine thickness for a zipped organizer.
- Approving a sample with the wrong Bible edition. Test the sample with the edition the customer will actually use.
Buyer measurement checklist
Before requesting a quotation, record the three dimensions, the exact Bible edition if known, any accessories to be stored, the desired handle or shoulder strap, and your target material. The blank worksheet below can be sent with reference photos. If several Bible editions must fit one style, send the largest and smallest physical examples so the compromise can be assessed during sampling.

From measurements to an approved sample
Our team turns the brief into a proposed pattern and pocket layout. During sampling, check that the Bible can be inserted and removed comfortably, that the zipper closes without rubbing the corners, that the spine can flex, and that pockets remain accessible when the book is inside. Approve the final sample and written dimensions before the production run.
